Description:
The Bay Pines VA located in sunny Pinellas County, Florida is excited to announce 3 fulltime externship opportunities. Our Audiology program offers a wide range of services including comprehensive audiometric testing, hearing aid selection & fittings, cerumen management, telehealth/virtual appointments, tinnitus management, vestibular assessment and CI programming and evaluations. The chosen Externs will rotate between the North Pinellas Outpatient clinic in Clearwater, FL and the main hospital, Bay Pines VAHCS, in St. Petersburg, FL.

Funding is assigned by the Office of Academic Affairs and may not have been determined by the application deadline. OAA funding is announced nationally at the same time which should allow sites to know funding at approximately the same time. Historically, our site:
is funded for three externships
Clinical opportunities provided during the externship:
- Audiologic evaluation
- Immittance measures
- Otoacoustic emissions
- Hearing aid selection
- Hearing aid fitting
- Assistive listening devices
- Vestibular evaluation
- Vestibular rehabilitation
- Electrophysiology evaluation
- Tinnitus management
- Cerumen Management
- Telehealth program
- Cochlear Implant Evaluations
- Cochlear Implant Management/Programming
Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
Externs are expected to be able to perform complete diagnostic audiometric evaluations with a good understanding of masking principles. Externs should be able to complete basic hearing aid fittings using real ear verification. Externs should be able to write well written, thorough but concise reports. Externs should be comfortable working in a fast paced environment.
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
Independently complete audiologic evaluations and hearing aid fittings in the allotted time including a well written report with appropriate coding. Be able to quickly assess and troubleshoot audiology equipment and hearing aid problems.

What level of supervision is provided:
100% initial supervision diminishing as appropriate based on Extern abilities. Preceptor will always be on site.
How many students per year both interns and externs:
3 – 4th year Externs and 2- 3rd year trainees
Continuing Education opportunities:
Externs participate in onsite trainings with hearing aid manufacturers.
Travel to satellites required?:
Yes. Main hospital and CBOC are located about 35 mins apart.
Are there interdisciplinary opportunities? If so what:
Yes, our externs consult social work, ENT, PCP, Physical Therapy and Blind rehab and participate in a TBI interdisciplinary team.
