We are pleased to announce that the Dayton VA Medical Center located in Dayton Ohio is accepting applications for two fourth year Au.D. externs. The externship is a 12 month paid position (2080 hours) at our main clinic with a start date in May 2025

Funding is assigned by the Office of Academic Affairs and may not have been determined by the application deadline. OAA funding is announced nationally at the same time which should allow sites to know funding at approximately the same time. Historically, our site: Awards two (2) fourth year externship positions each year.

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
Externs should be proficient with writing skills/grammar. Externs to arrive with knowledge and experience in comprehensive audiological assessment, hearing aid fittings/maintenance, ABR, vestibular testing and ALDs. The extern will refine and master these skills throughout their externship.
It is important the extern arrive with a desire to learn and work towards complete independence. We expect professionalism, punctuality & respect for our Veterans, supervisors and co-workers at all times.
Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
1) Professionalism
2) Comprehensive audio evaluation: Otoscopy OAEs, acoustic reflexes, reflex decay, OAEs, SRTs, pure tones, word recognition testing, speech in noise testing, counseling
3) Hearing aid fittings, REM, follow-up
4) Vestibular testing: VNGs w/calorics, vHIT, VEMPs, Posturography
5) Cochlear Implant: Candidacy, Mapping, After-care
6) Tinnitus management

Continuing Education opportunities:
Externs will participate in all on-site audiology/virtual trainings and are welcome to attend off-site manufacturer trainings per VA contract. They can also participate in other audiology CE opportunities.

The Dayton VA audiologists perform limited research at this time. However, we encourage externs to participate in research and we will help in any way possible.

Communication regarding mid-term and final evaluations. Communication as need throughout the externship.
