Description:
This is a fast paced, high volume outpatient clinic setting at the CVHCS medical center located in Richmond, Virginia. The clinic has 9 full-time Audiologists at the main site and 7 full- time audiologists at Community-Based Outreach Centers (CBOC). The extern may be required to travel to the community-based outreach center in Fredericksburg, Charlottesville, or Henrico, Virginia. Externship will start in May/June of 2025 with a 40 hour/week commitment for 12 months.

Funding is assigned by the Office of Academic Affairs and may not have been determined by the application deadline. OAA funding is announced nationally at the same time which should allow sites to know funding at approximately the same time.   Historically, our site: Site has received funding for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:    

  • Clinical competency in basic audiologic assessment and intervention along with basic hearing aid assessment, fitting, and follow-up skills
  • Good report writing skills
  • Clinical initiative and strong desire to further education and knowledge in the field of audiology

Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:   
-Independently demonstrate proficiency in all areas of audiological and vestibular assessment and intervention.
-Competent in areas of evaluation, prevention and treatment for hearing impaired patients (including all specialty clinics previously listed).
-Demonstrate excellence in the evaluation and care of all our Veterans and future patients.

Extern will participate in multiple interdisciplinary team activities including:
STAR program (APD)
Cochlear Implant Team
Vestibular Team
Bedside Clinic

Are there research opportunities? If so what?:   
Extern may participate in following/upcoming projects in areas of: APD, cochlear implants, AEP, system redesign with current focus on cerumen management.

Quarterly assessment

Site’s application requirements:

  • Enrollment in an accredited audiology doctoral program
  • Completion of all university academic and clinical prerequisites required prior to start of the 4th year externship
  • Clinical competency in basic audiologic assessment and intervention along with basic hearing aid assessment, fitting, and follow-up skills
  • Good report writing skills
  • Clinical initiative and strong desire to further education and knowledge in the field of audiology
