The West Palm Beach Audiology Department is excited to offer a funded Audiology Externship for 2027–2028.

The West Palm Beach VA Audiology Department consists of 16 audiologists and 5 audiology technicians across our main campus and three associated Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs): Delray Beach, Port St. Lucie, and the Indian River Clinic in Vero Beach. We offer a full range of clinical experiences, including hearing evaluations, amplification, ototoxic monitoring, cerumen management, Progressive Tinnitus Management (PTM), virtual care appointments, auditory processing evaluations, and a vestibular clinic. We also work closely with our Speech Pathology, ENT, Physical Therapy, and Psychology, as well as our large inpatient Blind Rehabilitation Clinic.

The anticipated start date is as early as May 17th, 2027, though this may be adjusted to accommodate the student’s needs.

Funding is assigned by the Office of Academic Affairs and may not have been determined by the application deadline. OAA funding is announced nationally at the same time which should allow sites to know funding at approximately the same time. Historically, our site:  Historically, our traineeships have been funded by the Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA).  Although we anticipate funding by the OAA for this position, it is at the discretion of OAA, pending budget approval.

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
Externs should have a strong foundation in basic audiological testing, hearing aid evaluations, and care. They should also have basic knowledge in vestibular testing. We expect the extern to be committed, trustworthy, and respectful. They should exemplify a willingness to learn, enhance clinical competency and reasoning skills, and be a team player.

Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
The extern will increase proficiency and time management, increase confidence and independence, synthesize results, and make appropriate clinical decisions.

Continuing Education opportunities:

  • Extern-specific training from all 5 manufacturers at the beginning of the externship
  • Training with all 5 manufacturers throughout the year
  • Trainings with other companies that supply items for our Veteran population (ADCO, Hear Central, etc.)
  • Externs are eligible to attend two off-site hearing aid manufacturer trainings
  • Externs are eligible to attend in Audiology conferences (JDVAC, AAA, ASHA)

Travel to satellites required?:
Yes, on occasion for specialty clinics.

Are there interdisciplinary opportunities? If so what:
There are opportunities to work with Speech-Language Pathology, Blind Rehabilitation Center, In-patient care, and the Community Living Center. Our Tinnitus Management providers collaborate with our in-house Psychologists.

Are there research opportunities? If so what?:
Not currently.

Mid-Term & Final Evaluations; Additional educative support, if needed.

Steps for the student/university to follow the application process:

We will be following the ACEN timeline.

  • Please have the Letter of Recommendation sent directly to the emails listed above.  You will receive a confirmation email for documents received.
  • Applications will be accepted from August 19th, 2026, to September 9th, 2026.  Applicants will be contacted by our Administrative Officer, Anne Clotaire Antoine, to schedule an interview.
  • Interviews will be conducted September 22nd, 2026, to September 24, 2026.

We anticipate extending an offer around September 28th, 2026.
